Home School Community Liaison

What is the role of the Home School Community Liasion Co-ordinator?

The Home School Community Liasion Co-Ordinator does the following, amongst other things:

  • organises the Local Committee.
  • promotes active co-operation between the home, the school and the community.
  • promotes the educational interests of the children.
  • works to provide classes for parents on a needs basis-for example, Cookery, Computers, English for beginners.
  • carries out Home Visits-the primary role is to identify needs and to provide support for the family/individual.
  • meets with parents in the school.
  • fosters social inclusion-promotes intercultural events, organises translation and interpretation.
  • networks with local agencies, including referral of families/ individuals to agencies.
  • engages in advocacy work on behalf of families-for example with MABS services.
  • is involved in Policy Formation with parents, teachers and students.
  • is a member of School Care Teams.
  • works on Transfer Programmes (with School Completion Programme personnel) that help children transfer smoothly from primary schools to post-primary schools.
  • ensures that the parents' room is a place of welcome for parents and guardians.
  • fosters Literacy, Numeracy and Science Initiatives-involving parents, teachers and students working together.
  • is a full time teacher whose primary role is to link between the home, school and the community.
  • sits on Management Committees.
  • is concerned with Staff Support.
